How much does a book trailer cost? A pricing guide for publishers

How much does a book trailer cost? A pricing guide for publishers: what drives production cost, how to read a quote, and how to set retail prices and tiers.

How much does a book trailer cost? Search the question and you will find answers written for individual authors, with ranges so wide they are hard to use. For a publishing service company the question is different. You need to know two numbers: what a trailer costs you to produce, and what you can charge an author for it while keeping a healthy margin.

This guide is written for publishers, publishing service companies and agencies that sell trailers as part of their packages. It covers what actually drives production cost, how to compare quotes fairly, and how to turn a production rate into a retail price list your sales team can use.

Why book trailer prices vary so much

Two trailers that both run one minute can be priced very differently. The length is the same, but the work behind it is not. Before you compare prices, compare what is being made.

Most of the cost of a trailer comes from a handful of decisions:

  • Visual approach. Kinetic text over stock imagery is the lightest option. Custom illustration, motion graphics, AI-generated scenes or full animation each add design and production time. Live-action filming with actors and locations is usually the most expensive route.
  • Script and concept. A trailer that simply restates the back-cover copy is quick. A trailer with a real story structure, a hook in the first seconds and a clear call to action takes a writer's time, and it is usually the part that decides whether the trailer works.
  • Voiceover. No voice, a synthetic voice or a professional human narrator are three different cost levels. Multiple voices or character dialogue add more.
  • Music and sound. Licensed library music, custom scoring and sound design all carry different costs. Licensing terms matter too: make sure the music is cleared for the places the trailer will run, including paid ads.
  • Deliverables. One horizontal master is the baseline. Vertical versions for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, a 15-second ad cut or subtitled versions each add editing time.
  • Revisions. Every extra round of changes costs production hours. A quote with unlimited revisions either has that cost built in or will become a dispute later.
  • Turnaround. Rush delivery means rescheduling a team. Expect to pay for it, or plan your launch calendar so you never need it.

How to read and compare a book trailer quote

When you collect quotes from production partners, the headline price is the least useful number on the page. Put each quote into the same structure before you compare:

QuestionWhy it matters
Is the price per finished minute or per project?Per-minute pricing makes it easy to quote 30-second and 90-second versions without a new negotiation.
Is the script included? If you or the author must write it, the real cost includes your team's time.
Are voiceover and music included and licensed?Unlicensed or limited-use music can block the trailer from running as an ad.
How many revision rounds are included? This sets the ceiling on hidden cost for both sides.
Which formats are delivered?Vertical cut-downs are often where authors get the most use, so know whether they are extra.
What is the scheduled turnaround? You need a reliable date to promise the author before launch.
Is delivery unbranded, under NDA?If you resell the trailer, it must carry no studio logo, and the studio must never contact your author.

A quote that looks cheap but excludes the script, music licensing and vertical versions can end up costing more than an all-in rate, once your own staff time is counted.

What a book trailer costs at MOVA

For reference, here is our standard rate, so you can see how a white-label production cost is typically structured:

  • One-minute book trailer from US$300 per finished minute.
  • Scheduled for five business days.
  • Three revision rounds included.
  • White-label delivery: no MOVA branding, and we never contact your clients.
  • NDA signed before the first file is shared.

Full rates for trailers and our other services are on the pricing page. If your authors want a different visual style, our AI book trailer service uses AI-generated scenes for genres where custom imagery makes the difference, such as fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction.

How to set your retail price for authors

Once you know your production cost, retail pricing is a business decision, not a production one. Three inputs matter most:

  1. Your production cost. The partner rate for the length and format you are selling.
  2. Your own time. Intake call, brief writing, collecting author feedback, quality check and delivery. Estimate the hours honestly and put a value on them.
  3. Your market. What your authors already pay for other services, and how the trailer fits next to editing, design and marketing in your packages.

Here is a simple example of how a publisher might build a price from a per-minute partner rate. The retail figures are for example only:

ItemExample
Partner production cost, one-minute trailer$300
Your account management timeValued by your team
Your retail price to the author (example)$900–$1,200

Your numbers will differ. The point is to price from a known cost, so every trailer you sell has a predictable margin.

Package tiers that make pricing easier to sell

Authors find it easier to choose between options than to accept or reject a single price. A tiered menu also lets you upsell without a hard sales conversation. For example:

  • Social teaser. A 30-second trailer in vertical format for Reels and TikTok. Entry price, easy yes.
  • Launch trailer. A one-minute trailer in horizontal format for YouTube, the author website and retailer pages.
  • Launch campaign. The one-minute trailer plus vertical cut-downs and a short ad version, ready for a paid social campaign.

You can also bundle the trailer into a premium publishing package rather than selling it alone. A bundled trailer raises the value of the package and removes a separate purchase decision.

Hidden costs to watch for

Most margin problems on trailers do not come from the production rate. They come from the edges of the project:

  • Scattered feedback. When the author sends changes one email at a time, each message can become its own revision. Collect feedback into one consolidated list per round.
  • Scope creep. "Can we add one more scene" after the script is approved is a new request, not a revision. Agree on this in your author contract, and make sure it matches your partner's terms.
  • Late materials. Missing cover files, an unapproved synopsis or an undecided tagline delay production and squeeze your launch date. Ask for everything at intake.
  • Unplanned formats. Authors often ask for a vertical version after delivery. Offer it upfront as part of a tier, at a price you set in advance.
  • Usage rights. Confirm that music and any third-party assets are cleared for paid advertising before the author spends money promoting the trailer.

Is a cheaper trailer worth it?

For a publisher, a trailer carries your name, not only the author's. A weak trailer reflects on your brand and makes the next sale harder. The useful question is not "what is the cheapest trailer?" but "what is the lowest cost at which we can deliver a trailer we are proud to resell, on a reliable schedule?"

The best way to answer that is to run one real title through a partner before you add trailers to your price list. You will learn the true turnaround, the quality and how revisions are handled. If you are new to reselling video, our guide to white-label book trailer production explains the workflow and what to check in a partner.
